I have only just discovered these forums so i presume we post any subjects her? My interest is military history and many have different ideas as to who was the best. My vote for world war 2 would be the Russian Zhukov as the best army leader. Navy would be US Admiral Nimitz. I am undecided as to air force. Possibly the british Hugh Dowding who won the battle of britain. As a combined air force of fighters and bombers i cannot say.

How would Rommel have coped at the time of the romans. Would Julius Caesar have won the battle of gettysburg? Can we compare an ace flyer to a warship commander?

Given what they had at the time my vote for the best would be army Napoleon, navy Lord nelson and air force undecided. not forgetting people like Ghengis Khan, Alexander the great. the greatest plan ever in military history. D Day basically planned by the british guy General Morgan.

You are besieged with no hope of relief. You know you are ghoing to lose and die but you continue because of your beliefs, the Alamo? Same said for the 300 spartans. Midway luckiest battle of all time? I will however tip my hat to Admiral Fletcher

If Caesar employed the weapons and tactics of his time at Gettysburg his legions would have been slaughtered in wholesale lots. If he were defending say the angle of the wall on the third day Pettigrew's soldiers would have blasted their way through him albeit with some casualties.

The battle of Thermopylae was one of the most significant events in the history of the world. Without its being fought as it was with such stunning heroism the Greek city states would not have, eventually, coalesced, so there would have been no Greek culture hence democracy would not have developed. The Alamo, while an example of valor and sacrifice had no military significance. It did brown off the Texicans, however and the Mexicans paid a fearsome price eventually.

Halsey made a very bad move when he took his battleship division far north to engage a diversion while the main Japanese force attacked the jeep carriers and their light escorts <Fletcher's Task Group> But this is not to be construed as second guessing or fault finding. I am merely stating the facts.
